Professor Angela G. Garcia, JD is a core faculty member of the Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Center (EXCELL), and is concurrently the Executive Director of the AIM RVR-CV Starr Center for Corporate Governance and the Hills Program on Governance.
Prior to joining AIM, she was a Partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in New York City, where she focused on corporate and complex commercial litigation. She has had experience with a wide variety of pre-trial, trial and appellate work in both federal and state courts.
As a practicing lawyer, the broad range of matters Prof. Garcia handled included securities fraud, breach of contract, defamation, civil rights class actions, RICO, fiduciary duty, tortuous interference, trademark infringement, ERISA, discovery in aid of foreign proceedings and enforcement of foreign judgments. Among other clients, she has represented the Bank of Israel, the Ministry of Finance of the State of Israel, Bank Hapoalim, Ltd., the Official Receiver of the State of Israel, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, Avis Rent A Car System, Inc., Prudential Insurance Co. of America,
Del Monte Fresh Produce Company, Warnaco Inc, Authentic Fitness Corporation, Empire State Development Corporation, L-3 Communications Corporation, Mahoney Cohen & Company, Mylan Laboratories, Inc., and Ansaldo North America, Inc. She has also represented various other corporations and their directors and officers in shareholder class and derivative actions, as well as in corporate takeover contests.
In addition, Prof. Garcia has been involved in significant international arbitration proceedings under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce. Clients she has represented in arbitration include CTF Hotel Holdings, Inc., PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk, and Avis Group Holdings, Inc. Prof. Garcia has likewise contributed much of her time to pro bono cases and activities.
Prof. Garcia holds a Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center where she graduated cum laude (1989). She received her Masters in Philosophy in International Relations and Diploma in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge (1984), and her BA from Mount Holyoke College cum laude (1982).
